UnMagic is my first full length children’s novel. It begins with Miss Chief, the leader of Unfairy faction 10B, being called in for an interview at P.U.F.F. (The Presidential United Fairy Federation) to discuss a mysterious incident involving her very troublesome new recruit, Miss Take. Through diary entries, letters and newspaper clippings in the incident file, we follow the story of the sceptical Miss Take's first few weeks with Unfairy faction 10B, as they try to settle her in, teach her about their particular brand of Unmagic and take her along on missions to show the people of their town the value of things going wrong. Miss Take is jaded by mysterious events in her past however and less than impressed by her new placement which, in her view, is just a bunch of misfits messing things up for everyone. Finally, Miss Take challenges the Unfairies to prove their method via a monstrously difficult and stubborn case of perfectionism: Mr McRabbage, the local maths teacher. After several disastrous turns of events the Unfairies find themselves in a tricky situation which only Miss Take can get them out of. But will she be able to master her fear of getting things wrong to save her new friends? And will her reckless actions lead to Miss Chief losing her wings? Well one thing is for certain; life is definitely unfair.
Unmagic is as yet unpublished but remains one of my favourite projects I’ve worked on as a writer and illustrator and a wonderful learning experience!
